Israel and Lebanon have agreed to start a ceasefire to stop the fighting, according to the Trump administration. The United States hopes this step will help create a larger agreement to end the conflict involving Iran.
The ceasefire will only work if Hezbollah completely stops its attacks and removes all of its fighters from the area south of the Litani River in southern Lebanon. This was announced in a joint statement by the US State Department after talks in Washington.
The agreement was signed by the governments of Israel and Lebanon. Although the conflict has mainly been between Israel and Hezbollah, the Lebanese government has been holding talks with Israel without Hezbollah. Lebanon is trying to strengthen government authority and reduce the influence of armed groups in the country.
Even after both sides agreed to the ceasefire, Israel carried out several drone attacks in the Nabatieh region of southern Lebanon on Thursday morning.
Israel and Lebanon, which do not have official diplomatic ties, also agreed to set up special “pilot zones.” In these areas, the Lebanese army will have full control, and no armed groups other than the state security forces will be allowed to operate.
